CoV vaccinations for children between the ages of five and eleven are starting in the USA: After the CDC issued a vaccination recommendation for this age group with the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine last night (local time), the first younger children were vaccinated that same evening. President Joe Biden called it a “turning point” in the fight against the pandemic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had given the vaccine emergency approval for this age group late last week. The government then already began shipping out more doses of the vaccine across the country. With the CDC vaccine recommendation, children five years of age and older can now receive their shot; according to government information, the vaccination campaign will then begin in full next week.

Approval also sought in EU
An application has also been filed in the EU for approval of its vaccine for five- to 11-year-olds. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) could decide on this by Christmas.

The Biontech vaccine is administered to five- to eleven-year-olds in two vaccinations, each with a dosage of ten micrograms, which is one-third of the usual dosage for adults. According to Pfizer, the vaccine’s protection against Covid 19 disease in this age group is 90.7 percent.
